Are you ready for the most exciting journey in the history of Rethymno?
Get your camera ready, put on your headphones, get in the mood for exploring and… let’s go!
We start from Agnostou Stratiotis Square and take Eleftheriou Venizelou Street, following the coastal road, passing the port and arriving at the imposing Venetian castle of Fortezza, where we make our first stop.
We continue along the coastline until we reach the entrance to the old town, where the historic building of the Anti-Region of Crete is located today.
After a few hundred meters we turn left and enter Igoumenou Gabriel Avenue to reach the magnificent Municipal Garden, our third stop.
From there, we follow Moatsou, Zimvrakaki and Emmanuel Portaliou streets, passing through the heart of Rethymno, and we arrive at BIO, the old core factory.
The next stop takes us back to the coastal road, where we come across the Caretta-Caretta nests A and B, which were created to protect this endangered species.
At this point, it was time to leave the city behind and head southeast towards the magnificent hinterland.
Our seventh stop is the Monastery of Panagia Halevi (16th century) with its magnificent flame-shaped windows. Next stop is Myloi, a verdant gorge, once full of watermills, right next to the now abandoned settlement.
Continuing through the wild vegetation, we reach the historic village of Chromonastiri, once a fortified settlement.
Don’t leave Chromonastiri without visiting the military museum with various exhibits from the struggles of the Cretan people.
Then we head towards Roussospiti, which is also called the “balcony of Rethymno” thanks to its amazing view.
The last stop on our route is one of the oldest female monasteries in Crete, the Monastery of Agia Irini (13th century).
Enjoy the ride!
